Blackburn Rovers manager Jon Dahl Tomasson praised his side’s attacking play in their win against Cardiff City on Wednesday evening, saying it was ‘exceptional’.
Rovers ran out 5-2 winners at Ewood Park, as they progressed to the fourth round of the EFL Cup, where they will head to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea.
Blackburn had taken a one goal lead twice, but were pegged back by the visitors each time, going into half-time at 2-2, with goals coming from Jake Garrett and Arnor Sigurdsson.
Rovers ran riot after the break, however, with a brace from Brighton loanee Andrew Moran and a fifth and final goal from Dilan Markanday secured Rovers place in the hat for the next round.
Jon Dahl Tomasson delighted with Rovers attack
After scoring nearly as many goals on the night as they had done in their last four league games (scoring six), Tomasson was delighted with his side going forward.
“It was a great result, a great performance. Some of the attacking football we saw today was exceptional, a high level. We scored five great goals,” Tomasson told the Lancashire Telegraph.
“It is great to see some of the players who haven’t played that much getting opportunities to get minutes as well. We don’t have the biggest squad so we need everybody up to speed.
“I am disappointed with the two goals we gave away, two unnecessary goals. Very easy situations to solve, we need to defend better with more spirit and the right attitude in those moments.
“It is, of course, a blow when you concede before half time but they dealt with the second half really well.
“Hopefully, all our fans have enjoyed the football we played and the goals we scored. We are through to the next round and we would like a good cup run like we had last season.
“Each cup is important in England – football is passion and the connection with your fans in those games, you can build togetherness like last season.”
“That is football and when you have a young squad, you make some mistakes. Our oldest players are Ryan Hedges and Sam Gallagher, they are injured.
“Sometimes we learn on the job, but I think we should focus on all the great things. Moran getting two, he could have had his first hat trick in a Rovers shirt. Arnor getting a goal as well. It’s positive.”
