Blackburn Rovers director of football Gregg Broughton said that he stressed to the owners the importance of keeping hold of manager Jon Dahl Tomasson.
The owners, the Venky’s, told both Tomasson and Broughton in June that the wage bill would be cut down 15%, with the Venky’s having limited funds due to geopolitical issues in India.
He expressed to the owners how good Tomasson is for the club and that they should give him more of what he needs if he is to stick around.
“I have communicated very clearly with the owners after their decision was given to us in June,” Broughton told the Lancashire Telegraph.
He added: “I said, by doing this, whilst I understand your hands are tied, you run the risk of losing and frustrating a very talented head coach. We must remember what Jon, the players and the club achieved last year.
Broughton gives reasoning to owners
Broughton went on and explained his reasoning to the owners, delving into how much Tomasson’s performances earned the club last season.
“Highest finish in 10 years, longest cup run for 10 years, generated squad value by 40 per cent in terms of book value with how they have developed. Put a clear playing style in place for the club to follow.”
“Financially, they added £2million in terms of TV revenue from cup prize money, ticket money. Jon has done everything we have asked as a head coach, as we expected him to. That’s why we brought him in and we thought he was the right fit for the club.
“I made that very clear to the owners but they have restrictions they are working under right now and we have to work to that budget remit.”
