Young Blackburn Rovers defender Ashley Phillips was the subject of attention from Tottenham Hotspur last week, but you can now add Newcastle United into the mix for the talented teen’s signature.
The Sun reported yesterday that Spurs would have to settle their deal for the youngster this week or risk losing out with Newcastle now a possible destination.
Rovers have until the start of the season to demand a high fee for Phillips, as a £2million escape clause kicks in this Friday ahead of their upcoming Championship campaign.
Ange Postecoglu’s side have offered the most lucrative deal so far, but it does not meet the total package valuation of £9.45million that Blackburn are hoping to receive – with time running out, Rovers could be forced to lower their valuation or risk losing their academy gem for a cut-price fee.
The Magpies have shown interest towards the 18-year-old, but their pursuit will likely go down to the wire in the hopes of activating his release clause should Jon Dahl Tomasson’s side not budge beforehand.
Born in 2005, Phillips made 14 appearances for Rovers last season as he forced his way into the first team picture.
The teenager is capped by England at Under-19s level and is one of the second tier’s brightest prospects, so it is no surprise to see him being linked with a Premier League switch before he has even established himself as a regular in for Blackburn.
What is next for Phillips?
Former Rovers boss Tony Mowbray was full of praise for the defender during his time at the club.
“He’s 6ft 4in, he’s fast, mobile and can pass it really well,” said Mowbray.
“He can use both feet, he is composed.
“Ash is just a phenomenal young boy. If you were to create a defender in the mould of how you would want one, this kid has got every attribute.”
It is unlikely that Blackburn will be able to keep hold of Phillips, but if they are to strike a deal for his departure then now is the time. Losing him for just £2million would be a disaster.
Whether that be to Spurs or Newcastle, a deal before Friday is the option Rovers have to take.
