Blackburn Rovers saw their poor Championship form continue on Saturday afternoon.
After their impressive performance against Premier League side Newcastle United on Tuesday, John Eustace saw his side quickly brought back down to earth.
A 2-1 defeat away at Swansea City, means that the Ewood Park club have now won just two of their last 17 Championship matches.
That run, combined with results elsewhere, means that Blackburn Rovers are now just one point clear of the relegation zone.
As a result, Saturday was not a good day for those connected with the club, and one player who struggled particularly in that match, was Andrew Moran.
A day to forget for Andrew Moran
Just as he did in the FA Cup in midweek, Brighton loanee Moran started in a somewhat unnatural central midfield role for Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
But while he had performed reasonably well in that position against the Magpies, in Wales, that is a selection call that did not work out.
Seven minutes into the game, Przemyslaw Placheta was able to get away from Moran to fire in the cross that was eventually turned in by Joe Allen to open the scoring for the hosts.
Then, less than 15 minutes later, Jamie Paterson was able to rob Moran in the Blackburn Rovers half, before driving into the area and firing home what proved to be the winning goal for the hosts.
As a result, Moran has now come in for scrutiny. Writing about the loanee’s performance on Saturday, the Lancashire Telegraph said:
“Played a hand in both of Swansea’s goals, with the second particularly poor as he was robbed in possession deep in his own half. Taken off at HT.”
That saw the 20-year-old receive a rating of just 4/10 for his performance in that defeat to Swansea City.
According to SofaScore, the Blackburn Rovers man lost possession five times on Saturday. That was less than the vast majority of his teammates, although he was not playing for as long as many of those.
Meanwhile, the Brighton loanee was adjudged to have won five of the nine duels he was involved in during that match.
He also completed five defensive actions, with only two Blackburn Rovers players recording more during the game. Furthermore, the midfielder recorded a strong pass success rate of 88%.
Going forward though, Moran did not take any shots, or successfully complete any dribbles.
Blackburn Rovers facing big selection call
On the whole, the stats suggest this was a reasonably solid performance for Moran.
However, he was still culpable for the two moments that proved so costly for Blackburn Rovers in this match.
Given how much that counted for in the game, and potentially come the end of the season, his substitution and rating are understandable.
Not only will that put him under scrutiny, but it is unlikely to have helped his confidence either.
It could therefore be deemed something of a risk to keep him in the side for Tuesday’s clash with Millwall.
Meanwhile, Sondre Tronstad, a more natural central midfielder, is set to be assessed ahead of a potential return from injury in that game.
That would give Blackburn Rovers a more reliable option in that position, meaning it may be no huge surprise if Moran is not in the starting XI the next time his side are in action.
