Blackburn Rovers are set to turn their attention from league to cup action on Tuesday night.

Right not, the priority will of course be to secure their status in the Championship for next season.

Under reently appointed head coach John Eustace, the Ewood Park club currenty sit 16th in the table, four points clear of the relegation zone.

Before they resume that campaign though, they are set to host Newcastle United in the fifth round of the FA Cup this midweek.

However, it seems there are expectations, that this game could lead to something of a difficult evening for Blackburn Rovers.

Chris Sutton expecting FA Cup defeat for Blackburn Rovers

While they have become harder to beat under Eustace, the Lancashire club have yet to really get going since his appointment.

After a 1-0 defeat to Birmingham City in his first official game in charge, Blackburn Rovers have now drawn their last three matches.

However, Chris Sutton is expecting the hosts to taste defeat on Tuesday, when they come up against Premier League opposition in the FA Cup.

Writing about the game in his predictions column for BBC Sport, Sutton – who was part of the Blackburn Rovers side that won the Premier League in the 1994/95 season – said:

“I scored in an FA Cup tie for Blackburn against Newcastle a few years ago – it was a wonderful finish, but we ended up losing in a replay, and I can see the Magpies getting through this time too.

“Blackburn drew at the weekend in the ‘Chris Sutton derby’ against my first club, Norwich, but they are yet to win in four games under new manager John Eustace, and I don’t see him getting a first victory here.

“Newcastle boss Eddie Howe really needs the FA Cup now, to recover a bit of faith with the fans after some disappointing results, including their heavy defeat by Arsenal on Saturday.

“Howe’s side should win, because they have got the superior players and I actually feel as if they will run away with this one a little bit.”

As a result, Sutton has predicted a 3-1 win for Newcastle United at Ewood Park.

John Eustace has bigger priorities at Ewood Park

Admittedly, it would be nice for Blacburn Rovers to pick up a win here in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

The club enjoyed an excellent run in this competition last season, and were agonsingly close to a long-awaited Wembley appearance.

Going one further this time around is something many supporters of the club would no doubt love to see.

Indeed, beating Premier League opposition at Ewood Park on Tuesday would also be hugely satisfying for Blackburn Rovers.

Ultimately though, it is remaining in the Championship that will be more crucial to the long-term future of the club.

As a result, that will have to be the focus more than this result, and they may not want to risk injuries here to many more key players with that in mind.

By contrast, this is Newcastle United’s last chance for silverware this season, so you would expect them to be going all out for the win here.

With that in mind, it does feel as though it could be a tough ask for Blackburn Rovers to come away with a positive result from this match.
