Blackburn Rovers certainly endured one of the more eventful periods in the January transfer window.
As well as the late saga around Duncan McGuire that saw that signing collapse, there were six new additions to the first-team squad.
Meanwhile, four players would also leave Ewood Park before the window closed. The most high profile of those was arguably Adam Wharton. The young midfielder generated a club record fee when he completed his move to Crystal Palace.
However, another exit from Blackburn Rovers that raised plenty of eyebrows earlier in the window, was that of Lewis Travis.
Captain’s exit from Ewood Park something of a surprise
In the lead-up to the January window, Blackburn Rovers’ head coach at the time, Jon Dahl Tomasson, had been clear in his desire to add more experience to his squad.
As a result, it surprised many when it was announced on the 5th January, that Travis had joined fellow Championship side Ipswich Town on loan until the end of the season.
Given his role as club captain, and the fact he has made well over 200 appearances for Blackburn Rovers, allowing the 26-year-old led to a loss of leadership and experience within the squad at Ewood Park.
That therefore, seemed a strange move given those claims that had been made by Tomasson ahead of the window opening.
Now, it could be argued that the way things have gone for Travis since he left Blackburn Rovers, have done little to make this move make any more sense to those watching on.
Lewis Travis struggling for games since leaving Blackburn Rovers
Having secured his move to Ipswich Town in January, things initially looked as though they had started well for Travis.
The midfielder was named in the Tractor Boys’ starting lineup in their first two league games after he joined from Blackburn Rovers.
That though, was then followed by three consecutive games in which Travis was forced to settle for being an unused substitute by Kieran McKenna.
Eventually, he did get another go in his side’s 4-0 win over Millwall on Wednesday night. But even then, he was only introduced as a 76th minute substitute at a time when Ipswich Town were already 3-0 up and cruising.
It appears evident therefore, that the Blackburn Rovers captain is now someway down the pecking order at Portman Road.
With that in mind, it is hard to imagine that Travis will be getting too much game time between now and the end of the season. That is something he may have wanted with this move, after starting just 12 league games for Blackburn Rovers in the first half of this season.
So not only has his parent club lost a vital presence from their first-team squad, but Travis right now does not seem to be gaining a great deal from this move either.
With that in mind, it could be argued that a return to Blackburn Rovers in the summer for their club captain will be a welcome one for all concerned.
